Some of you have already tried to convert .MTS files used by several cams out there (e.g. JVC Everio). I googled a lot how to convert them and i can recommend the method using FFmpeg as encoder. You can download some very basic and simple bash scripts i wrote for that job below. Feel free to modifiy the scripts to your needs.
