Failed compilation for VMware HGFS kernel module

Vmware-tools have a kernel module for shared folders. On Ubuntu 14.04 the module compilation fails with something like "alias […] inode.c […] line 28". The fix is quite easy, here are the simple steps:

cd vmware-tools-distrib/lib/modules/source
tar -xvf vmhgfs.tar
cd vmhgfs-only
vim inode.c
":%s/d_alias/d_u.d_alias/g" (execute vim command inside editor, no quotes)
":wq!" (execute vim command)
cd ..
tar -cvf vmhgfs.tar vmhgfs-only

Now install vmware-tools normally, then shutdown and add a shared folder to your VM. After a new boot you should access your shared folder at /mnt/hgfs

SFTP with ProFTPd on CentOS 6

OpenSSH is not the only one capable of doing file transfers over a secure line called SFTP (ShellFTP/SecureFTP/SSHFTP). ProFTPd can also do it using mod_sftp and the support has been added on version 1.3.3. Why choose SFTP over FTPS? Simple, SFTP transfers all data over 1 single port!!! This means you do not have to fiddle around with needed passive ports on your firewall setup.

Now here’s to install and run a separate SFTP server:

1. Download and install the EPEL repo (EPEL)

2. Install proftpd with:

yum install proftpd

3. Then edit your proftpd config file and add following content somewhere in the config file (somewhere at the end i suppose should be best):

LoadModule mod_sftp.c
<IfModule mod_sftp.c>
        SFTPEngine On
        SFTPHostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
        SFTPLog /var/log/proftpd/sftp.log
        SFTPOptions IgnoreSFTPUploadPerms
        SFTPClientMatch ".*" channelWindowSize 256MB
SFTPCompression delayed </IfModule>

3b. (Optional) Should you want to allow login for users with invalid shells (e.g. /bin/false or /sbin/nologin), do the following:

RequireValidShell off
# AuthOrder        mod_auth_pam.c* mod_auth_unix.c

4. start the proftpd server

service proftpd start

Corrupted roaming profile Windows 7

Hello,

we encountered several users getting temporary profiles when logging in to the domain controller (Windows Server 2008). The fix was quite simple, at least it work for our accounts. No garantee this will work for you.

  1. Delete the user account from your windows desktop machine.
Computer -> System Properties -> Advanced System Properties -> User Profiles
  2. Delete user folder from disk
    Computer -> C: -> Users
  3. Access roaming profile on server and delete NTUSER.DAT, NTUSER.INI and NTUSER.POL
  4. Restart desktop client

Next login worked like a charm and the temporary profile was gone.
